No other siege in history had such a profound effect on the birth of the modern world. The first Christian city of antiquity had fallen, the last "Roman" state, modern weaponry and armies were introduced into Europe via the Turks, the Turkish domination of the eastern Mediterranean helped spur the Age of Discovery. Also, the fall of the city is seen as an event that led to the end of the Medieval period in Europe. This helped add to the interest in Classical civilization that resulted in the Renaissance. Many Byzantine clerics fled the city and settled in Italy bringing much of the classical works of Roman Greece with them. I teach world history, and yes those other sieges are important, but as far as how shocking it was in the west when Constantinople fell, 1453 is considered to be a watershed year.

Plus culturally, the Turkish conquest of a European city was viewed as an apocalyptic event in history by westerners.
So not a direct inspiration, but the use of modern tools of warfare was present, also Constantinople is considered to be the most famous siege in World History. The Turks did plunder the city for three days, but the Sultan called everyone to prayer and to stop the violence, bringing peace to the city. This have them the ability to exploit the weakest part of the city's fortifications. The Turks then greased the hulls of their naval ships and were able to drag them overland the other side of the Bosporus strait. During the siege the massive canons of the Turks were able to breech the ancient walls of the city (use of gunpowder). Then Sultan Mehmet II laid siege to the city for many months. The Ottoman Turks had absorbed and conquered much of the former Byzantine Empire before 1453. The Battle of Constantinople 1453 has some similarities.
